- Waffle House Raises Prices by 50 Cents
- Egg Shortage Due to Avian Flu
- Average Egg Price Exceeds $7
Waffle House announced on Tuesday a 50-cent increase in the prices of its dishes that include eggs, in response to the shortage caused by avian flu.
With nearly 2,000 locations across the United States, the company emphasized that this measure is necessary due to the crisis in egg production, which has been exacerbated by the outbreak of the virus.
Since last December, the culling of millions of chickens as a measure to contain avian flu has directly impacted egg supply.
This shortage has led to a 50% increase in egg prices over the last year.
Waffle House Expects Price Increase to Be Temporary Due to Egg Shortage
In a statement, Waffle House said it expects this price increase to be temporary, although it could not predict exactly how long the shortage will last.
The average price of a dozen eggs in the United States has reached a record high, surpassing $7, more than triple the cost a year ago when it was around $2.
According to official data, over 100 million laying hens have been culled since 2022 due to the avian flu outbreak.
The impact of the crisis is not limited to prices: the virus has resulted in one death and 67 infections in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Additionally, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt has pointed to the government of former President Joe Biden for the decision to cull 100 million birds, a measure that, according to her, caused the current egg shortage.
The avian flu outbreak continues to affect the supply chain in the United States, and an immediate solution to the crisis is not anticipated.

With the avian flu pandemic at its peak since 2022, analysts suggest that food costs could continue to rise, affecting more industries that rely on poultry products.
Farms and producers face severe challenges in recovering production levels prior to the crisis.
The U.S. government has increased efforts to contain the spread of avian flu and improve farm safety conditions, but results have not been immediate.
In this scenario, restaurant chains like Waffle House are forced to adjust their prices, which could impact consumer decisions.
This phenomenon is not exclusive to Waffle House, as other restaurant chains and supermarkets have also raised the prices of egg-containing products, causing widespread concern among consumers and food market analysts.
