The Venezuelan migrant community in the United States is expressing deep feelings of betrayal and abandonment by Donald Trump’s administration following the termination of humanitarian relief and the repeal of the 2023 Temporary Protected Status (TPS).

«Trump was supposed to help us escape chavismo, not negotiate with them and deport us. They are abandoning us to our fate.»

These were the words of a Venezuelan immigrant in Miami, who chose to remain anonymous. Like many others, she now faces the possibility of having to leave the country before April 2.

In response, various Venezuelan organizations in Miami have called for a meeting to protest the removal of Humanitarian Parole and the revocation of TPS.

«Not all Venezuelans are part of the Tren de Aragua.»

This was stated by José Antonio Colina, president of the Organization of Politically Persecuted Venezuelans in Exile (Veppex), in response to comments made by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. She had claimed that Venezuelan migrants pose a national security threat.

TPS was a crucial relief program for approximately 350,000 Venezuelans in the U.S. who now face deportation.

According to figures from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Tren de Aragua, an international criminal network originating in Venezuela, has only 600 active members in the U.S., representing just 0.09% of the estimated 700,000 Venezuelans in the country.

The revocation of TPS coincides with Trump’s announcement that Caracas will accept the return of deported Venezuelans following a meeting between special envoy Richard Grenell and Nicolás Maduro, who agreed to finance deportation flights.

Venezuelan Lives in Limbo

«Who can dismantle a life in two months? This is cruelty,» lamented a Venezuelan manicurist living in Doral, Miami, identified as González. Thanks to TPS, she and her husband were able to establish a business and support their children, but now their future is uncertain.

TPS recipients from 2023 will lose their protection on April 2, while another 270,000 Venezuelans who received the benefit in 2021 will lose it on September 10, 2025.

Initially, the Biden administration had extended protection until October 2026, but Trump reversed that decision.

«TPS benefited two groups of Venezuelans. The first expires in April, but we expected it to be extended for six more months for evaluation. The second expires in September,» explained immigration attorney Ángel Leal.

Legal Actions and the Fight for Residency After TPS Revocation

The Venezuelan-American Caucus has announced legal action to attempt to extend TPS, which allows citizens from crisis-stricken countries to live and work in the U.S., according to EFE.

«You are not alone. Dark days are coming, but we will take this to the courts,» declared Adelys Ferro, president of the Caucus.

Ferro argued that conditions in Venezuela have not improved but have worsened, with an increase in political prisoners following last July’s elections. This, she says, reinforces the need to maintain TPS for Venezuelans in the U.S.
