Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that the United States will suspend the implementation of 25% tariffs for 30 days following a conversation with US President Donald Trump.
In a social media post, Trudeau stated that as part of the agreement, Canada will appoint a «fentanyl czar,» include drug cartels on the list of terrorist organizations, ensure ongoing border surveillance, and establish a joint task force to combat organized crime, fentanyl, and money laundering in collaboration with the US
The Prime Minister described his conversation with Trump as «good» and announced the signing of a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl, with associated funding of 200 million Canadian dollars (approximately 136 million U.S. dollars).
«The proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days as we work together,» Trudeau stated.

The decision to temporarily suspend the tariffs comes just hours before the United States was set to apply a 10% levy on purchases of Canadian oil and gas and 25% on other imports.
In response to these tariffs, Canada had announced last Saturday the imposition of 25% tariffs on 30 billion dollars in US exports.
The country was also planning to extend the measure to another 125 billion dollars of U.S. imports starting February 25.

Trudeau and Trump had a conversation on Sunday morning and agreed to speak again at 15:00 local time (20:00 GMT) to try to reach an agreement that would suspend the tariffs.
Before the second call, Trump also reached an agreement with the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, to suspend the tariffs that the US was set to apply to Mexican products starting Tuesday.
The agreement with Mexico was achieved after Sheinbaum committed to sending 10,000 soldiers to the U.S. border to strengthen the fight against drug and human trafficking.
