  • Here Are the Details

A recent analysis by the Pew Research Center reveals that a significant majority of Americans support granting citizenship to undocumented immigrants.

Provided they meet specific requirements, including background checks.

According to the survey, 60% of respondents favor allowing undocumented migrants to apply for citizenship.

While 79% see background checks as essential for regularizing their status.

The poll, conducted from August 5 to 11, 2024, among 9,201 adults, paints a complex picture of immigration views in the U.S.

While a majority supports legalization under strict conditions, such as employment and compliance with legal requirements, there is also substantial support for mass deportations.

Seventy-five percent of adults expressed concern over the number of immigrants entering the country illegally, and a majority approves of large-scale deportation efforts.

However, the study reveals a paradox: many who support mass deportations also believe undocumented immigrants should have a pathway to legal status.

43% of Deportation Supporters Also Favor Legalization for Migrants

In fact, 43% of respondents who back deportations agree that undocumented migrants should have the opportunity to legalize their status.

Among the proposed requirements for legalization, respondents strongly favor background checks (79%) and employment (52%).

While, to a lesser extent, some support fines.

Opinions are divided: 25% in favor, 37% considering it optional, and 35% opposed, according to EFE.

Challenges in the Immigration Debate

Despite the support for legalization, the survey reflects a shift in attitudes toward immigration compared to previous years.

Support for allowing undocumented migrants to stay legally has dropped from 75% in 2020 to 64% today, while opposition has risen from 24% to 35%.

This trend indicates increasing polarization in the national immigration debate.

The results also highlight significant demographic differences in attitudes toward undocumented immigrants.

Hispanics, African Americans, Asians, and those under 29 are more likely to support undocumented immigrants, whereas whites, particularly those over 50, tend to have a more negative view of legalization.

Political and Social Implications in the US

Despite conditional support for legalization, the survey reveals a strong sentiment against “rewarding those who break the law.”

Eighty-six percent of respondents believe undocumented immigrants should not be allowed to stay in the country without consequences, citing law and justice as the main reasons.

Additionally, two-thirds of respondents stated that the most important reason for opposing undocumented migrants staying in the U.S. is the belief that they «take resources» from American citizens.

This concern reflects growing anxiety over the strain immigrants may place on public services and the welfare system.
