  • Here are the details.

This Thursday, the United States announced the implementation of new immigration protections for Lebanese citizens currently in the country, in response to the growing instability and conflict in Lebanon.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) informed that a Temporary Protected Status (TPS) will be granted for 18 months.

This allows beneficiaries to remain in the U.S. while a diplomatic solution is sought to ensure security along the Israel-Lebanon border.

The TPS designation will be available to Lebanese nationals who have continuously resided in the U.S. since October 16, 2023.

Those arriving after that date will not be eligible for these immigration protections from the US.

TPS ensures that beneficiaries are not deported, allows them to obtain an Employment Authorization Document (EAD), and grants travel authorization. It also protects them from detention by DHS due to their immigration status.

However, it is important to note that this protection does not lead directly to lawful permanent residence.

This measure follows a memorandum issued by President Joe Biden on July 26, which considered Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) for certain Lebanese nationals.

Over 11,000 Lebanese in the US Qualify

The Norwegian Refugee Council reported that more than 276,000 Lebanese and Syrians have been displaced to Syria due to Israeli attacks in the context of the conflict with the Shiite group Hezbollah.

It is estimated that around 11,000 Lebanese in the United States qualify for these new immigration actions.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has published procedures for beneficiaries to apply for their EAD, valid until January 25, 2026.

The granting of these new immigration protections reflects the U.S.’s commitment to supporting those affected by the crisis in Lebanon and demonstrates an active response to the challenges faced by migrants in conflict situations.
