The United States clarified that it does not yet recognize Edmundo González Urrutia as the president of Venezuela.
However, it does recognize him as the winner of the elections held on July 28.
It urged both the Chavismo and the opposition to negotiate a democratic transition.
«We are in close contact with our partners in the region,» said Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the State Department.

The spokesperson reiterated the call for the National Electoral Council of Venezuela (CNE) to publish the voting records.
The CNE proclaimed Nicolás Maduro’s victory without providing any evidence.
Miller emphasized that any evidence from the CNE will require «thorough scrutiny.»
Miller said that even if all pending votes were in favor of Maduro, they would not surpass González’s lead.
The CNE declared Maduro as the re-elected president with 52% of the votes compared to González’s 43%.

The opposition claims fraud and has published copies of records that show a victory for González.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken recognized the electoral victory of Edmundo González.
Blinken acknowledged the voting records obtained by the opposition that would give González an overwhelming victory.
The presidents of Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico have been more cautious and asked the CNE to make the records public.
They also requested a verification of the results.
