  • Here are the details.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has intensified efforts to transfer Ismael «El Mayo» Zambada, co-founder of the Sinaloa Cartel, to New York to face charges there.

Zambada, 76, currently detained in El Paso, Texas, has requested to be tried in that state, arguing that moving to New York would violate his right to a speedy trial.

Zambada’s lawyers have filed a motion with Federal Judge Kathleen Cardone, requesting that he first face charges in Texas.

They argue that it has not been adequately justified why New York should take priority.

However, DOJ prosecutors have responded that Zambada has not provided a compelling basis to prevent his transfer to the federal court in New York and that they are not obligated to prioritize one judicial process over another.

Zambada faces charges in New York, Texas, Illinois, and California as well.

The indictment in New York, updated in February, includes charges related to trafficking fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that has driven an overdose crisis in the U.S.

The New York court has previously sentenced Joaquín «El Chapo» Guzmán to life in prison.

While his son, Joaquín Guzmán López, detained alongside Zambada, has been accused of deceiving the capo into surrendering to U.S. authorities.

The DOJ has highlighted that both «El Mayo» Zambada and Guzmán López face multiple charges for leading criminal operations of the Sinaloa Cartel.

Including lethal fentanyl trafficking networks.

The decision on Zambada’s transfer could have significant implications for his trial and the U.S. approach to drug trafficking.
