The United States has denied offering amnesty to Nicolás Maduro to leave power after his reelection in the elections of July 28.

Deputy State Department Spokesperson Vedant Patel refuted the information published by The Wall Street Journal.

The newspaper had claimed that the Biden Administration had offered amnesty to Maduro to persuade him to step down before January.

Patel affirmed that «this is not true» and denied any offer of amnesty to Maduro or other officials following the elections.

However, he noted that the United States is considering «a wide range of options» to pressure Maduro to return to the democratic path.

The Wall Street Journal cited three anonymous sources who indicated that pardons had been offered to Maduro and high-ranking Chavista officials.

These pardons would be aimed at those facing charges from the U.S. Department of Justice.

In 2020, the United States offered a $15 million reward for information leading to the arrest of Nicolás Maduro.

Maduro, for his part, claimed that the United States is willing to give him «whatever it takes» to get him to leave power.

The United States does not recognize Maduro’s victory in the elections and considers that the winner was the opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia.
