  • Trump’s Pentagon pick Pete Hegseth is designated as a «threat.»
  • An Army National Guard veteran and Fox News host.
  • Here the details.

Pete Hegseth is the Army National Guard veteran and Fox News host nominated by Donald Trump to lead the Department of Defense.

Pete Hegseth is identified as a possible «internal threat» due to a tattoo on his biceps, which is linked to ideologies of white supremacy and Christian nationalism.

The tattoo in question bears the Latin phrase “Deus Vult” (God wills it), historically used by some extremist groups, including white supremacists.

The case came to light after an email from Hegseth’s fellow service member, who alerted the D.C. National Guard chain of command in January 2021.

In the message, the former member of the unit expressed concern about the possible connection of the tattoo with extremist movements, warning about a possible «internal threat» in the military ranks.

Hegseth, who is critical of the Pentagon’s measures to address extremism within the military, especially following the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, downplayed the incident.

According to Hegseth, he had been unfairly labeled an extremist because of a religious tattoo of a cross on his chest.

And he mentioned that he was removed from custody during Joe Biden’s inauguration due to his connection to the attack on the Capitol, although without being directly involved.

However, retired Master Sergeant DeRicko Gaither, who investigated the tattoo, raised his concerns with the commanding general of the District of Columbia National Guard.

In his communication, Gaither warns that the phrase “Deus Vult” is used by some extremist groups, which can put the internal security of the army at risk.

A threat inside the Pentagon?

If his appointment is confirmed, Hegseth would oversee a Defense Department that has been taking steps to combat extremism, particularly in the wake of the Jan. 6 riots.

Where more than 230 people with military backgrounds were arrested, including those with ties to the far right.

Hegseth, for his part, has downplayed the magnitude of the problem of extremism in the military and has publicly criticized the Pentagon’s efforts to root out members linked to white supremacy.

In his book The War on Warriors, Hegseth describes the fight against extremism within the military as a «fabricated lie,» and notes that it was used to expel «patriots» from the military ranks. .

The context of his tattoos

The “Deus Vult” tattoo has a complex background. Originally associated with medieval crusades, the phrase has been adopted in recent times by some far-right movements and Christian nationalist groups.

Its inclusion in the body of an active duty member raises concerns, as certain extremist groups invoke this phrase as part of their anti-Muslim and xenophobic ideology.

Travis Akers, a former Navy intelligence officer who posted photos of Hegseth’s tattoos on social media, expressed concern that someone with these symbolic connections could be in charge of leading the U.S. military.

“It is worrying to see a person with those symbols nominated to lead the most powerful army in the world,” Akers said.

Support for war criminals and controversial comments

Hegseth defends soldiers and veterans who are accused of war crimes.

His support for figures such as Eddie Gallagher, a Navy SEAL convicted of posing next to a dead Islamic State captive, has generated controversy.

Additionally, Hegseth is critical of the Pentagon’s restrictions on rules of engagement and defends those accused of human rights violations.

In recent interviews, Hegseth has suggested that his retirement from the National Guard in 2021 was due to his political ideology and his ties to Fox News.

And it suggests that military authorities considered him a «problematic» figure because of his conservative views.

A questioned appointment

Pete Hegseth’s nomination to lead the Pentagon, a position crucial to national security, is now being seen in a new light as questions arise about his ties to extremist ideologies and his stance on extremism within the military ranks.

The revelation about his tattoo and concerns about his stance on military justice could generate resistance to his nomination.

Since many question whether a man with such credentials can effectively lead a department charged with ensuring the security of the United States.
