President Donald Trump of the United States announced this Sunday that citizens might feel some «economic pain» due to the imposition of new tariffs on key trading partners.

“Will there be some pain? Yes, maybe (and maybe not!)” Trump wrote in capital letters on his social media platform, Truth.

This occurred a day after he signed tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China over concerns regarding illegal immigration and drug trafficking.

However, he argued that «it will be worth the price» to protect the country’s interests.

“But we will make America great again, and it will all be worth it for the price we have to pay,” he added.

On Saturday, Trump signed the order imposing a 25% tariff on products from Mexico and Canada, and a 10% tariff on oil and gas from Ottawa, as well as on products from China.

This move ends weeks of uncertainty and is based on the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, recently invoked by the president.

According to the White House, in the case of China, this new tariff adds to those already existing on its exports to the United States.

Additionally, the order eliminates the «de minimis» exemption with Canada for shipments under $800 and provides a mechanism to increase tariffs if any of the three countries decide to retaliate against the United States.

The U.S. government justified the measure, stating it will remain in place until these nations cooperate in the fight against drug trafficking and immigration, two of the main points on Trump’s agenda.

However, the response was swift, according to Infobae.

Mexico, Canada, and China rejected the accusations from the White House and announced the application of retaliatory tariff measures against the United States, which could escalate trade tensions between these countries.
