- 65,000 employees have already accepted the offer
- Unions question the financing of the program
A federal judge in the United States allowed the government of Donald Trump to proceed with its plan to offer severance packages to federal employees to voluntarily resign.
The measure aims to reduce the size of the Executive and had been temporarily suspended due to a union lawsuit.
District Judge George O’Toole decided to lift the restriction.
He argued that the unions do not have standing to file the complaint and that his court does not have the necessary jurisdiction, as reported by The Washington Post.

The program, announced at the end of January by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM). Allows full-time federal employees to accept the offer before February 6.
However, it excludes members of the military staff, the Postal Service, and those working in national security and immigration, according to EFE.
Data from the White House indicate that about 2.3 million federal workers are eligible for the program. And so far, approximately 65,000 have already accepted the severance offer.
Unions representing federal workers filed a lawsuit against the OPM alleging that the program lacks «basic information» and that it could be violating federal law.
They also questioned Congress’s ability to fund the payments. Since the current federal budget expires in March, according to the law passed in December under the administration of Democrat Joe Biden.
This judicial decision comes a day after Trump signed an executive order to significantly reduce the government workforce.
The order grants greater power to the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which is under the supervision of Elon Musk and aims to cut public spending.
