The president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, has once again warned about a possible intervention in the Panama Canal.

In a press conference at Mar-a-Lago, Trump accused Panama of imposing excessive tariffs on U.S. ships.

The president pointed to China as the main beneficiary and claimed that the Asian giant is taking control of the canal.

«The Panama Canal was built for our military,» Trump stated, criticizing former president Jimmy Carter once again.

According to Trump, the decision to transfer the canal to Panama was a «big mistake.»

The handover process was completed in 1999 under treaties negotiated by Carter during his presidency.

Trump suggested that this decision was one of the reasons Carter lost his reelection bid in 1980.

The president-elect has reiterated his intention to take control of the canal after assuming office on January 20.

The Government of Panama has flatly rejected any possibility of surrendering control of this strategic waterway again.

Donald Trump did not specify how he plans to regain control over the Panama Canal or whether he would resort to economic or military measures.

«Something will have to be done,» the president-elect responded when questioned about his concrete plans.

These statements come as Jimmy Carter’s body is being transported to Washington for his state funeral.

The Panama Canal, one of the world’s most important commercial routes, is once again at the center of geopolitical tensions.
