U.S. President Donald Trump issued a fresh trade threat against China on Monday, announcing that his administration will impose an additional 50% tariff if the Asian country does not remove its retaliatory 34% tariffs by tomorrow.
The warning was delivered via a statement Trump posted on his social network, Truth Social, and later reported by Reuters.
In his message, the president harshly criticized Beijing’s economic policies, claiming that in addition to the new 34% tariffs, China enforces “record tariffs, illegal subsidies, non-monetary restrictions, and massive currency manipulation.”
“If China does not remove its 34% hike — on top of its long-standing trade abuses — by tomorrow, April 8, 2025, the United States will impose ADDITIONAL tariffs on China of 50%, effective April 9,” Trump wrote in the post.

The president also warned that all previously agreed diplomatic and trade meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping’s government will be suspended.
“All conversations with China related to meetings they have requested with us will be terminated,” Trump stated.
He also confirmed that negotiations with other nations interested in trade deals would begin immediately.
Tensions between Washington and Beijing are once again on the rise with this new tariff threat, bringing back memories of the trade war during Trump’s previous term from 2017 to 2021.

Back then, the tit-for-tat tariffs hit sectors such as agriculture, the tech industry, and global finance particularly hard.
So far, the Chinese government has not issued an official response.
However, international analysts anticipate a strong reaction from Beijing if Trump follows through with his threats.
Experts in global trade warn that a tariff escalation at this time could inject uncertainty into markets and stall the global economic recovery, directly impacting supply chains and the cost of key goods.
