Former President of the United States and current Republican candidate for the White House, Donald Trump, claimed this Friday that the presidency grants almost absolute power, emphasizing that a president has the ability to do «everything.»
«You can do everything,» Trump stated during his speech at the Happy Warriors Summit, organized by the influential conservative group Moms for Liberty in Washington DC.
The former president stressed that «the president has such power» that he can even «shut down the border,» referring to the executive ability to implement restrictive immigration policies.
These statements come in a context where the scope of presidential powers has been a subject of debate in the United States, especially following the Supreme Court’s decision to grant partial immunity to Trump in relation to the January 2021 Capitol assault.
Trump Breaks Silence on Presidential Power
On July 1, the Supreme Court, with a 6-3 vote, ruled that a former president is entitled to absolute immunity for actions that occurred within his constitutional authority.
However, the Court also determined that there is no immunity for non-official acts, leaving room for Trump to face charges for actions conducted outside the scope of his presidential duties.

The Supreme Court’s decision has sparked intense debate over the extent of presidential power and the limits of immunity a former president can enjoy.
The special prosecutor in charge of the Capitol assault case, Jack Smith, has adjusted the accusations against Donald Trump to align with this judicial ruling.
Smith filed a new indictment that lowers some of the previous allegations but maintains the original four charges, including conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding.
Despite the modifications, the investigation focuses on Trump’s attempts to subvert the outcome of the 2020 elections, in which he was defeated by current President Joe Biden, according to Efe.
In particular, the prosecutor has withdrawn the accusations related to Trump’s efforts to have the Department of Justice support his unfounded claim of electoral fraud in the 2020 elections.
According to reports from The Washington Post, the new charges focus on other aspects of Donald Trump’s plans to alter the election results.
The Supreme Court ruling has been interpreted by some as a partial endorsement of Donald Trump, exonerating him from responsibilities linked to his interactions with the Department of Justice during his presidency.
The Court argued that such exchanges were part of presidential duties and therefore could not be subject to criminal prosecution.
This ruling has reinforced Trump’s stance and his discourse regarding the legitimacy of his actions as president.
