  • Trump requests delay of sentencing
  • A controversial request
  • Here are the details.

The lawyers for former President and Republican White House candidate Donald Trump have requested a delay in the sentencing for the criminal case related to the irregular payments to porn actress Stormy Daniels.

The defense has asked for the sentencing to be postponed until after the presidential elections on November 5.

In a letter addressed to Judge Juan Merchan, Trump’s attorney, Todd Blanche, argued that maintaining the sentencing date, scheduled for September 18, is perceived as an attempt at electoral interference.

Blanche maintains that, since the sentencing date is right after the start of early voting for the elections, there are no valid reasons to rush the process.

«Setting aside clear objectives of electoral interference, there is no valid compensatory reason for the court to not keep the current sentencing date on the calendar,» stated Blanche.

Additionally, the attorney has criticized the fact that the proposed date for the sentencing is so close to the ruling of the U.S. Supreme Court that addresses Trump’s presidential immunity, a crucial issue in the case.

Last May, Trump was found guilty of 34 serious crimes of falsifying business records related to a payment made to silence Daniels.

This payment, according to the prosecution, sought to protect Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, which he ultimately won.

Donald Trump’s Defense Attempts to Discredit Judge Merchan

The former president’s defense has repeatedly tried to discredit Judge Merchan, alleging conflicts of interest and seeking to remove him from the case.

They have also announced their intention to appeal the conviction. Although these attempts have managed to postpone the sentencing on a couple of occasions, the defense has not yet succeeded in stopping the process from moving forward.

Trump’s sentencing was initially scheduled for July but was delayed to September 18 to allow Judge Merchan to review a recent Supreme Court ruling on Donald Trump’s criminal immunity.

The request to delay the sentencing underscores the ongoing tension surrounding the case and the complex intersection between criminal justice and electoral politics in the United States.
