Former U.S. President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has proposed eliminating taxes on overtime pay to boost employment.

“The people who work overtime are some of the hardest-working citizens in our country,” Trump said.

“And for too long, no one in Washington has looked out for them,” he stated during a rally in Tucson, Arizona.

The New York businessman said he presented this proposal to some “great economists” and received feedback that it would be “incredible.”

Donald Trump noted that police officers, nurses, factory workers, construction workers, and truck drivers would be among the employees who would benefit most from his initiative.

When the workweek exceeds 40 hours, the extra hours would be tax-free.

“It’s time for hard-working men and women to finally get a break, and that’s what we’re doing.”

“I think it will be great for the country,” he said.

This tax cut plan adds to another widely publicized proposal: removing taxes on tips in the service sector.

Donald Trump proposed this in June in Nevada, a key swing state with a large number of tipped employees.

Vice President and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris also endorsed this idea there in August.

For this reason, the Republican campaign has accused Kamala Harris of plagiarism.

The White House later declined to say whether the Biden Administration had ever considered the idea of removing taxes on overtime pay since taking office in January 2021.
