Former President (2017-2021) and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he would push for the death penalty for any migrant convicted of murdering a U.S. citizen. This marks one of the most extreme proposals in his anti-immigration rhetoric.

«We have to do it… I’m calling for the death penalty for any migrant who kills a U.S. citizen or a law enforcement officer… Congress will pass it,» said the former president in front of a crowd in Greensboro, North Carolina.

This marks his fourth visit in two days to the state, which is one of seven key states that will determine the next occupant of the White House.

North Carolina, with 16 electoral votes, is a battleground state where polls show an extremely close race between the Republican and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Trump was expected to focus his speech on recovery efforts in North Carolina, which was hit hard last month by Hurricane Helene, leaving over 230 dead, most of them in that state.

Although he criticized the federal government’s response to the disaster, the Republican repeatedly returned to his anti-immigration rhetoric during his nearly two-hour speech.

Trump even suggested that immigration is the issue most concerning to Americans, more than the economy. This was an attempt to push his «open borders» rhetoric aimed at criminals, which has garnered him support and applause.

However, according to the latest Gallup poll, the economy is the only issue where the majority of voters (52%) say candidates’ positions are an «extremely important» influence on their vote.

Donald Trump’s Plans Continue

Another 38% of voters rate the economy as «very important,» meaning the issue could significantly influence nine out of ten voters.

The poll found that immigration ranked fifth among a list of 22 important issues for voters, according to the survey published last week.

«I think (immigration) is number one, it’s first, and the second is the economy, and the third is inflation. I think the border is the greatest threat to this country,» Trump said, referring to the poll results.

Under that argument, he attacked his rival Harris again, accusing her of having «open borders.» This, despite the asylum restrictions imposed by the Biden administration since June, which have reduced arrests at the southwest border to numbers lower than in 2020, the last year of Trump’s administration, according to newly revealed data.

Mass Deportations

Donald Trump once again promised mass deportations and a 10-year punishment for those who return after being expelled.

He boasted of the support from Border Patrol workers who deal with the supposed crisis at the southern border, once again claiming that drug traffickers, rapists, and criminals are entering.

For the second time that day, Trump insulted and attacked Harris: «We don’t need another low-IQ person. We had one for four years, we don’t need another,» the former president said, repeating what he had said earlier at a rally in Miami.

He insisted that his rival «is lazy and was sleeping» while he worked hard, referring to the fact that Harris had no public campaign events scheduled for the day. Meanwhile, former President Barack Obama (2009-2017) campaigned for Harris in Wisconsin and Detroit (Michigan) alongside rapper Eminem.
