  • Here Are the Details

Former U.S. President and current Republican candidate Donald Trump pleaded not guilty on Thursday to new charges related to the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.

Trump submitted his plea through his lawyers, choosing not to attend the reading of the charges in the District Court of Columbia, in Washington DC.

The new indictment, filed by special prosecutor Jack Smith on August 27, maintains the original four charges, including conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, but has been modified to align with the Supreme Court’s ruling on presidential immunity.

On July 1, the Supreme Court granted Trump partial immunity, determining that former presidents are entitled to absolute immunity for actions within their constitutional authority, though not for unofficial acts.

Today’s hearing marks the first meeting between the prosecution and defense since the Supreme Court’s ruling.

The Capitol riot, which left five dead and about 140 officers injured, involved around 10,000 protesters.

Most of them were Trump supporters, who marched toward Congress to disrupt the certification of Democrat Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election.

Trump’s not-guilty plea in the new Capitol riot charges marks a new chapter in a case that has captured national attention.

The recent modification of the charges to align with the Supreme Court’s ruling on presidential immunity underscores the influence of judicial decisions on the case’s progression.

Moreover, the amendment of the charges to conform to the Supreme Court’s ruling on presidential immunity reflects the legal complexity of the case.

As the process moves forward, attention will focus on how the accusations are resolved and what impact they will have on his presidential campaign.
