  • Here are the details

Donald Trump has once again outlined his goal of deporting millions of undocumented immigrants, but this time with a more focused approach in his current campaign for the White House.

With plans to invoke wartime powers and rely on supportive governors and military forces, Trump aims to execute what he promises will be the largest deportation program in U.S. history.

Despite these ambitious goals, the Trump administration during his first term fell short of its mass deportation targets.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, as of January 2022, there were approximately 11 million undocumented people in the U.S.

In comparison, Trump never deported more than 350,000 people in a year, while his predecessor, Barack Obama, reached 432,000 deportations in 2013.

In recent statements, Trump’s campaign confirmed that if reelected, he would launch a massive deportation program, though specific details on how it would be carried out were not provided.

To address the legal challenges that would surely arise, Trump has proposed invoking the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, which allows for the deportation of non-citizens from countries with which the U.S. is at war.

Additionally, he has expressed his intention to deploy the National Guard to make arrests in collaboration with Republican governors.

Analysts Warn About Trump’s Approach

Legal experts have cautioned that while Trump’s approach could be legally feasible, implementing it would be highly complicated and challenging.

Politically, Trump’s mass deportation plans also face obstacles.

Although there is support among his base, such a campaign could break up families and worsen labor shortages in key sectors.

Experts agree that even if Trump is unable to fulfill his mass deportation ambitions, merely suggesting such plans creates an atmosphere of fear within immigrant communities.
