Questions for potential jurors

Candidates had to answer a long list of 42 questions, a process that lasted between five and seven minutes per person.

Many questions were straightforward, such as: What do you do for a living? Who is your current employer? What do you like to do in your free time? Do you have any interests or hobbies?

Others, were specifically about Donald Trump, like: Have you ever attended a Trump rally? Are you currently subscribed or have you ever been subscribed to any newsletter or email list managed by Trump or his organization?

Another was: Do you follow Trump on any social network, or have you done so in the past?

Potential jurors were also asked if they had read books written by Trump or by Michael Cohen, Trump’s former lawyer and right-hand man.

Cohen is expected to be one of the star witnesses for the prosecution.

On Monday, more than half of the potential jurors from the first batch of 96 people interviewed — about 200 candidates are interviewed per day — were excused after stating they could not be impartial.

On Tuesday, during the round of questionnaire questions, several potential jurors said that, upon reflection, they realized they also could not be impartial and asked to withdraw.

Reasons some people are excused from sitting on the jury

Other reasons some candidates were excused from the jury included personal conflicts, such as weddings or work.

This was due to the difficulty of taking time off to sit for a trial that could last between six and eight weeks.

Once the first round of questions was completed, the remaining potential jurors were subjected to further questioning by the defense and prosecution lawyers.

Both parties can dismiss up to 10 jurors without needing to provide an explanation.

The criminal trial begins Monday, April 22

This process was repeated twice, and both sides eliminated some jurors.

Trump’s legal team vetoed six potential jurors and the prosecution another six.

At the end of the day, the judge expressed hope that the rest of the jurors would be selected on Thursday and Friday — as there is no session on Wednesdays.

Now everything is set for this unprecedented trial to begin Monday, April 22.
