President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced a one-month delay to the implementation of the 25% tariffs on Mexico.
This decision came after a phone conversation with the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum.
Sheinbaum has committed to deploying 10,000 National Guard troops along the border.
Trump shared the update via his Truth Social network, highlighting the «friendly» conversation with Sheinbaum.
Bilateral Negotiations to Avoid Tariffs and Strengthen Border Cooperation Between Mexico and the United States
During the month of suspension, negotiations will take place between both governments.
For the U.S., negotiations will be led by Marco Rubio, Scott Bessent, and Howard Lutnick.
Sheinbaum announced that the deployment of the National Guard will be immediate to curb fentanyl trafficking.
Trump emphasized that the troops would be tasked with stopping the flow of drugs and illegal migrants.
Both leaders agreed that this pause period would be used to reach a settlement.
Trump expressed his desire to be directly involved in the negotiations with Sheinbaum.

On Saturday, the White House had announced that the tariffs would take effect starting Tuesday.

Mexico fears the impact of the tariffs, as 30% of its GDP depends on trade with the U.S.
The Mexican Institute of Competitiveness reported that exports to the U.S. totaled $490.183 billion in 2023.
