Last Sunday in Las Vegas, former Republican President Donald Trump (2017-2021) targeted Latino voters during a campaign rally.

The rally, dedicated to the Hispanic community, took place amidst scorching heat.

During his speech, Trump attacked migrants crossing the southern border, claiming they are harming the economy of Latinos who already live in the US.

Trump insisted that the situation at the southern border is «unsustainable» and accused President Joe Biden of creating a «crisis».

He remarked that the asylum restrictions announced by the incumbent last Tuesday «mean nothing.»

«If Joe Biden wanted to sign an executive order to stop the invasion all he would need to do is say: ‘Here I reinstate all the border policies of someone named Donald Trump’.»

The former president spoke in front of attendees gathered at Sunset Park, where temperatures were over 100 degrees fahrenheit.

As he has since 2016, the former president used anti-immigrant rhetoric and directly targeted migrants arriving at the southern border.

Asserting that they are harming «American Latinos,» as he refers to members of this community who have legal status in the country.

He also falsely claimed that migrants «are taking 100 percent of the new jobs.»

«They’re hurting our families, they’re destroying our black population, they’re destroying our Hispanic population, and you know what else they’re destroying… our unions.»

Trump used Sunday’s event to rename the campaign focused on the Hispanic and Latino community from Latinos for Trump to Latin American for Trump.

The change was made to emphasize that Latinos are Americans, said Jaime Florez, director of Hispanic communications for the Trump campaign, to Efe.

Nevada has been elusive for Republicans since 2008, when former President Barack Obama (2009-2017) comfortably won the state.

Something that cost him in 2020 when Biden won by about 34,000 votes, or 2.4 percentage points in his favor.

Érika Castro, organizer of the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada, explained to EFE that the votes of the Latino community helped Biden win Nevada, considered a swing state.

But the situation seems to be changing, with polls in Nevada currently favoring Trump.

According to the average of polls by the website FiveThirtyEight, he leads by five percentage points, with 45% .

A recent New York Times/Siena College poll showed that the former Republican president is gaining support among Latino voters.

With 36% saying they would vote for him, compared to 26% who said they would vote for Biden.

Young people in Nevada are also leaning towards Trump, exemplified by Puerto Ricans Gustavo and Elena, aged 24 and 26, respectively.

Both siblings reside in Nevada and believe that the former president represents «a good future» for the country, they told Efe.

The same arguments were expressed by Guatemalan Mary Gutiérrez, 50, who came from San Bernardino (California) with her family to attend the former president’s rally.

The immigrant told Efe that Trump’s defeat in 2020 motivated her to become a citizen so that the former president could count on her and her family’s vote.

This morning the Gutiérrez family arrived at 5:00 am to line up early to ensure a seat near the podium and express their support for closing the border.

«Someone has to put order to this situation, and I think immigrants who come not to follow the rules should be deported,» Gutiérrez pointed out.

At the end of the speech, Gutiérrez said she was excited about the Republican’s promises to secure the border, cut taxes, and revitalize the economy.

Trump concluded his rally by inviting attendees to vote in the Nevada primaries next Tuesday, June 11.

On that day, Trump will surely be chosen as the Republican candidate, despite the state party statutes specifying that no convicted person can be elected as a candidate.
