Former U.S. President Donald Trump has requested the Pentagon to prepare plans to regain control of the Panama Canal.

According to NBC, the Southern Command is assessing the deployment of troops in coordination with Panama or even resorting to force.

Trump insists on reclaiming the Panama Canal amid alleged Chinese influence

The decision will depend on the cooperation that the Panamanian military agrees upon with Washington.

In recent weeks, Trump has insisted that the canal is under Chinese influence, a claim that Panama denies.

During his speech to Congress, he reiterated that the United States «will reclaim» the strategic infrastructure.
