U.S. President Donald Trump stated this Wednesday that he has reached an agreement with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.

The agreement aims for both countries to «immediately begin negotiations» with the goal of ending the war in Ukraine.

According to Trump’s post on his social media platform, Truth Social, the agreement with Putin was achieved after a «long and very productive phone call.»

During the call, both leaders expressed their willingness to «stop the millions of deaths occurring in the war between Russia and Ukraine.»

It remains unclear what role, if any, Ukraine may have played in this agreement between Trump and Putin.

The U.S. president stated that he intended to call his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, immediately to inform him about the conversation with the Russian leader.

Trump detailed that the United States and Russia will «immediately begin negotiations.»

The U.S. delegation will be led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, White House National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.

«Millions of people have died in a war that would not have happened if I had been president, but it did happen, so it must end.

No more lives should be lost,» Trump stated, expressing confidence that these negotiations «will be successful.»

The president explained that during his conversation with Putin about the war in Ukraine, the Russian president used the phrase «common sense.»

A phrase that Trump has also used to justify some of his decisions since returning to power on January 20.

The two leaders also agreed to make official visits to each other’s countries, according to Trump.

The U.S. president took the opportunity to thank Putin for «his time and effort» during the call.

As well as for the recent release of Marc Fogel, an American teacher detained in Russia since August 2021, whom Trump welcomed at the White House last night.

Additionally, the two leaders discussed other issues such as the situation in the Middle East, energy policy, artificial intelligence, the «power» of the dollar, and other topics of bilateral interest, Trump detailed.

They also reflected on «the great history» of their nations and the fact that both countries fought together «with great success» in World War II.

A war in which the Soviet Union lost «tens of millions of people,» while the United States suffered «numerous» casualties.

«Each of us spoke about the strength of our nations and the great benefits we will one day achieve by working together,» Trump explained.

This marks the first time that Trump has publicly announced speaking with Putin since his return to the White House.

However, The New York Post reported on Saturday that, in an exclusive interview with the president, he had already revealed that he had spoken with the Russian leader to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine.

Both leaders met in person at least five times during Trump’s first term (2017-2021).

Some meetings took place on the sidelines of international summits such as the G20.

Others were formal encounters, such as the Helsinki summit in 2018, which was specifically aimed at addressing the relationship between the two powers.
