U.S. President Donald Trump escalated tensions with Mexico on Thursday.

He claimed that the neighboring country has violated the 1944 Water Treaty and called the alleged breach “unfair.”

“THIS ENDS NOW! I will make sure Mexico does not violate our treaties or harm our Texan farmers,” he wrote on his platform, Truth Social.

He was referring to the treaty that governs the distribution of water from the Tijuana, Colorado, and Rio Grande rivers, from Fort Quitman, Texas, to the Gulf of Mexico—which the U.S. has renamed the Gulf of America.

According to Trump, Mexico owes Texas 1.3 million acre-feet of water—a substantial amount. This equals approximately 160,290 cubic hectometers and represents a serious blow to Texan farmers.

In response, the president announced that he had already suspended water shipments to Tijuana last month.

“My Secretary of Agriculture, Brooke Rollins, is defending Texas farmers, and we will continue to escalate the consequences,” he stated.

“INCLUDING TARIFFS, and maybe even SANCTIONS, until Mexico honors the Treaty and GIVES TEXAS THE WATER IT IS OWED!” he added.

Donald Trump further warned that the measure will remain in place until Mexico complies with the treaty, according to EFE.

According to Trump, this is a decision that can no longer wait. “This ends NOW,” he declared during his statement.

Meanwhile, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum attempted to ease tensions.

Last week, she stated that there is an agreement with the United States and that Mexico will comply with the treaty “little by little.”

Sheinbaum explained that the country is experiencing a historic drought that makes water supply increasingly difficult.

This has made it nearly impossible to fulfill the terms of the border agreement. However, tensions have continued to rise for weeks.

In March, Texas lawmakers urged Trump to use trade negotiations to pressure Mexico.

The legislators requested that the water issue be included in tariff discussions.

They aim to ensure the 1944 Water Treaty is upheld without exception.

According to President Trump, this situation will no longer be allowed to harm American farmers.
