The United States filed criminal charges against more than 10,000 foreigners for repeatedly entering or re-entering the U.S. through the Arizona border irregularly during 2024.
Among the accused are leaders and coordinators of immigrant trafficking organizations from Mexico and Colombia.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced the final figures for 2024 on Monday, highlighting that the highest number of charges occurred in the last quarter.
The incidents took place between October 1 and December 31, when a total of 3,141 migrants were charged.
US to deploy large number of troops for Trump’s inauguration
During the first quarter of the year, from January 1 to March 31, 2024, the U.S. prosecution charged 2,113 migrants.
In the second quarter, from April 1 to June 30, charges were brought against 2,641 migrants, while from July 1 to September 30, 2,611 people were processed.

In total, during 2024, the DOJ filed criminal charges against 10,506 foreigners for entering or returning to the U.S.
This, after being deported irregularly via the Arizona border.
Context of tension
According to this agency, the charges are part of President Joe Biden’s efforts to combat irregular immigration.
This process sets a criminal record in the file of foreigners, making them ineligible to return legally to the country in the future.
During 2024, the DOJ also filed charges in Arizona against 1,235 individuals accused of human trafficking.
This includes minors and young people, mostly U.S. citizens recruited to transport undocumented immigrants.
A historic event
Migrants being processed face sentences ranging from days to years in prison, depending on the case.
The charges were made possible through investigations and collaboration between the Tucson Border Patrol Sector and the Yuma Sector.
