Trader Joe’s recalls basil
Several people have contracted Salmonella after consuming Infinite Herbs organic basil.
The cases have been reported in at least seven U.S. states.
According to CNN, the product was sold in 2.5 oz packages.
The affected basil was distributed in Trader Joe’s stores between February 1 and April 6, 2024, across nearly 30 states, including Washington, DC.
Several people in seven states contracted Salmonella
The CDC has advised those who purchased the organic basil to dispose of it.
This includes Infinite Herbs organic basil bought at Trader Joe’s between the mentioned dates.
They also advise that individuals who purchased the basil should clean all containers and surfaces that came into contact with the contaminated herb.
So far, there have been 12 cases of people sickened by salmonella linked to this product so far.
Contaminated basil in 7 states
One person has been hospitalized due to the infection from the contaminated basil, but no deaths have been reported at this time.
It has also been noted that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the CDC and local health authorities are investigating the outbreak further.
Salmonella causes symptoms such as fever, stomach cramps, joint pains and diarrhea.
Symptoms can appear from six hours to several days after ingesting the bacteria, although people usually recover within four to seven days.
What are the symptoms?
The outbreak has reportedly been detected in seven states: Georgia, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Florida, Minnesota, Rhode Island and Missouri.
Children and the elderly are more susceptible to severe symptoms that could lead to hospitalization.
The CDC urges the public to report cases to Trader Joe’s Customer Relations at (626) 599-3817.
They also request reports of adverse events related to the Infinite Herbs organic basil on the FDA’s MedWatch site.
