  • Are These Measures for Border Security?

The Biden administration has announced new asylum measures at the U.S.-Mexico border, further tightening restrictions on immigrants entering the country.

According to AP reports, these new guidelines will make it even more difficult to lift the existing asylum ban that has been in place for some time.

Back in June, the Biden administration implemented a rule prohibiting undocumented individuals from seeking asylum in the U.S.

As a result of this measure, the number of migrant detentions at the border has significantly decreased.

Activist groups argue that this measure violates the human rights of migrants who need protection and should be able to seek asylum under existing laws.

Under the newly announced regulations, which are now in effect, the requirements to lift the asylum ban have increased, including restrictions that apply to unaccompanied minors.

One of the changes stipulates that in order to lift the ban, there must be fewer than 1,500 daily arrests over a 28-day period.

This measure is aimed primarily at curbing migration and reinforcing border security.

The restrictions on asylum have led to a 70% increase in deportations of adults and families at the border.

Most immigrants arriving in the U.S. come from Latin American countries such as Haiti, Venezuela, Nicaragua, and El Salvador.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), there are 21 million displaced people across the Americas.

With the U.S. elections just a month away, the issue of immigration remains one of the most contentious topics between candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.
