Several people lost their lives on Wednesday in St. Lucie County, on Florida’s east coast.
This occurred after a tornado, preceding Hurricane Milton, tore through a retirement community, local authorities confirmed.
The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Department informed WPTV about “multiple fatalities” at the Spanish Lakes Country Club.
It is a community inhabited by elderly residents.

Keith Pearson, St. Lucie’s Chief Sheriff, stated that the exact number of fatalities has yet to be determined.
Emergency teams have initiated search and rescue operations in the affected homes before the heavy rains from Hurricane Milton reach the area.

“We have dozens of homes in St. Lucie with significant damage, some completely destroyed,” said Erick Gill, the county’s spokesperson, in a statement to WFLA.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced in a press briefing that at least 19 tornadoes struck central and southern Florida on Wednesday.
