- Families Will Face a Tough Decision
Tom Homan announced on Thursday, December 26, that the incoming U.S. government will reintroduce the detention of migrant families when it takes office on January 20.
The ‘border czar’ for president-elect Donald Trump gave an interview to The Washington Post.
In the interview, he explained that immigration authorities will detain adults with minor children in centers with tents or temporary shelters.
Similar to those used during migrant surges.
There Will Be No Exceptions, According to the Border Czar
Homan also stated that the government will not take into account whether the children are born in the U.S. and thus have American nationality.
“The problem is this: you knew you were in the country illegally and decided to have a child. So, it was you who put your family in that position,” he said.

Tom Homan detailed that families will have to decide whether to be deported with their children to their home countries or leave them in the U.S.
In 2021, shortly after taking office, the Biden administration closed down family detention centers in the U.S.
“We’re going to have to build facilities for families. The number of beds we’ll need will depend on the data,” Homan said.
Tom Homan served as the director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during Trump’s first term.
He is considered the architect of the migrant family separation policy.
Trump promised during his campaign the deportation of millions of undocumented migrants, a promise that Tom Homan is tasked with fulfilling.
This measure has sparked controversy among human rights and migrant advocacy groups.
They criticize the emotional and social impact on children.
The incoming administration, including Tom Homan, argues that these policies are necessary to strengthen border security.
They aim to deter irregular immigration. We will have to wait for the first actions.
