  • The investigation is ongoing.

In a shocking case, a Miami Beach couple has been arrested after their infant son was hospitalized with multiple serious injuries, including 18 broken ribs.

Authorities said Tina Joy Palmer, 37, and Stephen Michael Palmer, 42, face serious charges related to the incident.

The Palmers were arrested on Thursday, January 11, and charged with child neglect causing significant bodily harm.

According to Miami-Dade jail records, Stephen Palmer also faces an additional charge of aggravated child abuse or torture.

This case came to light after the Palmer’s son, born on October 18, was found unresponsive in their apartment on Collins Avenue.

The baby had to be rushed to the hospital, according to NBC Miami.

When paramedics arrived, Stephen Palmer was performing CPR on the infant, a dramatic scene that became a race against time to save the baby’s life.

First responders continued chest compressions as the baby was rushed to Mount Sinai Medical Center.

There, the baby was resuscitated and intubated before being transferred to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, where he was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit.

Doctors soon discovered that the infant’s injuries were alarming.

The multiple rib fractures were not consistent with typical CPR injuries, raising the level of concern among medical staff.

In addition, the baby had a brain hemorrhage and a deep laceration over his chin and under his lower lip, further complicating his condition.

In a disturbing twist, Stephen Palmer told investigators he found the baby unresponsive, with «blue colored lips.»

He stated that the baby had recently had a fever and had suffered from frequent vomiting and crying, although he believed it was due to colic.

Tina Palmer suggested that a laceration on the baby’s chin may have been caused by squeezing the baby bottle too hard.

However, neither parent could give a convincing explanation for the origin of the rib fractures and other serious injuries.

Stephen Palmer went so far as to describe the baby as «very fragile,» but this statement did not allay investigators’ suspicions.

Tina Palmer said that, because of working two jobs, she has not taken her baby to a pediatrician since her two-week appointment.

The subsequent medical exam revealed an even more disturbing situation, according to NBC Miami.

Nurses found a total of 18 rib fractures, a fracture in the boy’s right hand and acute bleeding on both sides of the brain.

Even more alarming were additional wounds on the baby’s genitals and multiple lacerations on different parts of his body.

These injuries are described by doctors as «highly suspicious for non-accidental trauma indictive of severe physical abuse,» according to arrest warrants.

A judge ordered that Stephen Palmer be detained without bail on charges of aggravated child abuse/torture causing serious bodily harm and child neglect causing serious bodily harm.

According to jail records, Tina Palmer was still being held on $100,000 bail on a charge of child neglect causing great bodily harm.
