President of Venezuela’s National Assembly calls for jail after elections
Opposition leaders in Venezuela are being called to jail after the election in which Maduro was declared the winner.
2024-08-01T20:00:35+00:00- The opposition claims that Nicolás Maduro did not win the elections.
- He said that «they have to go to jail.»
- Maria Corina Machado and Edmundo Gonzalez lead the protests.
In an unexpected turn of events following the controversial elections in Venezuela, Jorge Rodríguez, president of the National Assembly, has demanded jail time.
The politician attacked Maria Corina Machado and Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, leaders of the opposition in Venezuela.
Rodríguez said that both opposition leaders are responsible for a «fascist conspiracy» against the government of Nicolás Maduro, according to CNN.
This statement has shaken Venezuela, generating great controversy.
THEY ACCUSE THEM OF THE WORST
In a fiery speech, Rodriguez did not mince his words: «Their bosses should not go to jail, those who ordered them to go, those who paid them.»
He also clarified: «And when I say boss, I’m not just referring to María Corina Machado, I’m referring to Edmundo González Urrutia, because he is the head of the fascist conspiracy.»
This statement comes at a critical time, following last Sunday’s controversial elections.
Opposition leader María Corina Machado has challenged the Consejo Nacional Electoral (CNE) to publish the voting records.
In front of thousands of supporters, Machado said that, according to 84% of the ballots in the opposition’s possession, Edmundo González obtained a resounding victory with 70% of the votes.
«Today Venezuela has its president,» he proclaimed, raising González’s hand in triumph.
The controversy does not stop in Venezuela.
The OAS has urged Maduro to acknowledge his defeat or call new elections, while the European Union has questioned the transparency of the process.
The CNE website, where the results were supposed to be published, has been down since Monday, further fueling suspicions of manipulation.
In response to the growing pressure and tension, Maduro has announced the creation of a special commission, with the advice of China and Russia, to strengthen the CNE’s cybersecurity.
However, the situation on the streets of Caracas and other cities in the country continues to escalate.
Authorities have arrested 749 people and reported violent incidents that have left dozens injured and according to Foro Penal, cited by CNN, up to 11 dead.
