«The 53 agricultural workers were on board a bus on their way to a watermelon farm to work,» details the association on the fundraising page.

«Around 6:00 in the morning, the bus collided with a pickup truck, causing it to veer off the road and overturn,» they said.

The organization’s goal is to raise $50,000. «All proceeds will go towards supporting the victims and their families affected by this terrible accident.»

The Florida Highway Patrol took over the investigation and confirmed that the bus passengers were traveling westbound on SR-40, headed towards Cannon Farms in Dunellon.

When the driver of a 2001 Ford Ranger pickup truck collided with it from the side.

For the rescue of the victims, authorities closed State Route 40 in Marion County, Florida, for hours.

Eight fatalities were declared at the scene, and the survivors were transported to local hospitals.

Eight workers, according to the report from AdventHealth Ocala, were in critical condition, while more than two dozen had non-life-threatening injuries.

«Agricultural workers tend to be forgotten, but it’s important not to forget them, especially in such difficult times,» is the plea made by the Farmworkers Association to the entire community nationwide.

Hours after the traffic accident, authorities announced the arrest of Bryan Maclean Howard, 41, owner and driver of the truck involved in the terrible tragedy.

Howard remains in custody, charged with eight counts of driving under the influence: manslaughter, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

While there is one detainee, the investigation remains active. Authorities consider weather conditions as one of the possible causes of the crash.

As the situation is clarified, Cannon Farms, the farm where the victims worked, requests:

«Please, pray with us for the families and loved ones involved in this tragic accident.»
