  • Mitos y Leyendas shares the legend of Irazú.
  • It is a story that conveys the message that true love is eternal.
  • Its form of reunion is one that repeats over and over and enchants those who know the legend.

Under the silver light of the full moon, a peaceful night embraced a couple of lovers on the shore of a calm stream.

She, the fragile, slender, and sweet daughter of the chieftain. He, an agile, tall, and strong warrior, known for his skill in hunting and his fearless spirit on the battlefield.

The moon, a witness to their love, watched over their plans, their challenges, and their passion. Sitting together, with intertwined hands, they promised eternal love while listening to the silent whisper of the peaceful night.

Suddenly, the silence was disturbed by the painful crunch of a breaking branch. The warrior quickly stood up, wielding his sharp dagger, but the unsettling sound did not repeat.

A joyful night in the village

The harmony of the calm night returned, and a gentle breeze carried the scent of fragrant wildflowers.

The village, with its small and numerous huts, the imposing palenque, and the majestic temple to the Sun God, remained awake. Families gathered in their huts around sparkling bonfires, sharing stories and laughter.

In the temple, a solemn silence reigned as the stone statue in honor of the Sun reflected the reddish flames of a perpetually lit torch.

In the palenque, the tribe leaders listened to the legends of local heroes, narrated by a servant of the Sun temple, whose drum resonated furiously when the story turned dangerous or heroic.

The great priest

The old chieftain, seated in a prominent place, listened attentively. His face, marked by the traces of time, shone as if made of bronze, illuminated by the yellowish flames of the bonfire, expressing intense serenity.

Like a feline entering its lair when not facing danger, the great priest entered the palenque, arrogant and silent. He approached the patriarchal chief and began to whisper his tale.

None of those present could clearly hear the priest’s words.

The old man’s face, which had been serene seconds before, began to rapidly change expression.

Chaos takes over the night

Flames, like primitive reflectors, illuminated his transformation: disgust, apathy, mild interest, deep attention, surprise, sadness, anger, wrath, fury.

The chieftain slowly stood up and the narrator immediately stopped his tale. Soon after this, the great priest, with his small and sparkling black eyes, stepped away from the chieftain.

He headed towards the temple with a slow but firm step.

In front of the Sun monument, he tore his garments and cried out in deep pain:

The Great Priest asks for punishment for his daughter

«Oh almighty God, immense Sun! I come on this sad day to ask for mercy for us and exemplary punishment for the one who has disobeyed your inflexible commands.»

«My own daughter, foolish, has long loved a warrior from the tribe of hunters, an enemy of our race and religion. I beg you to punish her sacrilegious sin and curse the miserable unbeliever.»

The chieftain continued pleading, first with a sonorous and strong voice, and then with powerful shouts that echoed throughout the village.

The God listened. With his omnipotent hand, he took the sweet and loving young woman, transforming her into a soft, white, and vaporous cloud that adorned the sky of Costa Rica for the first time.

Irazú awakens

The vengeful God did not touch the brave warrior. He died of loneliness, swearing to fight eternally to reunite with his beloved.

As was customary, the intrepid warrior was buried in the plain with rituals and ceremonies that honored his merits and ranks.

His friends quickly left the place, leaving his body in the tomb as a guardian of his eternal oath.

That same night, the tomb broke the monotony of the plain and began to grow.

Irazú fulfills the promise

With a titanic effort, it became a mound, then a dune, and gradually a hill, then a mountain, until it became the imposing Irazú, a gallant sentinel of the plain. The oath had been fulfilled.

On cold mornings, the white and vaporous cloud lovingly embraces the gigantic Irazú.

The virile warrior was eternally enjoying his love, a bond that not even the omnipotent God of the old chieftain could break.

Mitos y Leyendas bids you farewell for now, but before that, it expresses thanks for your support. This story was taken from the reference Castro, G. (1957).
