  • Mitos y Leyendas shares the legend of the Dwarf of Uxmal, part of the Maya culture.
  • The Mayas were an ancient civilization located in Mexico, specifically in its southern part.
  • Yucatán is the state featured in this popular Maya legend.

Long ago, in the ancient Maya city of Kabah, there lived a wise old woman who worked at the city’s oracle and longed for a child.

She prayed to the god Chicchan to grant her this wish. One day, Chicchan appeared to her and instructed her to go to the cenote each day and look for an especially large turtle egg.

Following these instructions, the old woman soon found a huge egg and brought it home. She cared for it lovingly and spoke to it.

When the egg finally cracked open, a green-skinned, red-haired, and unattractive-looking dwarf emerged.

The mother loved and raised him with devotion, protecting him from others’ mockery, except when she went to the cenote for water.

One day, the little dwarf decided to make a larger jug so that his mother would take longer to return. While waiting, he discovered a drum and a peculiar rattle.

He began to play these instruments, whose sound spread throughout all the cities of Mayab.

The king of Uxmal heard the sound and remembered the prophecy that whoever played those instruments and their sound was heard in all the cities would become the new king.

King’s Challenges

The king ordered to find the musician behind the instruments. They discovered that the green dwarf of Uxmal was the musician, and the king challenged him to a series of tests intending to eliminate him.

One of them was to bring him a pregnant turkey. The dwarf brought a man disguised as pregnant. He burst into laughter.

The king said it was impossible for a man to be pregnant. So the dwarf replied that the same was true for a turkey and questioned why he had been asked for one.

The jury declared that due to the impossible task and its very nature, the dwarf was the winner of the test.

Another challenge was a race. The king, to win, transformed into a deer. The little one asked his best friend, the frog, for help. After that, the protagonist cast a spell on him and the frog won the race.

Finally, the king proposed a last test: to break cocoyoles on each other’s heads with a spear hit by a stone.

The dwarf agreed but on the condition that if he survived, the king would also have to face the same test. The dwarf’s mother provided him with a special plate for protection.

Guards began breaking these on the dwarf’s head but he withstood all the hammer blows and nothing happened to him.

The little dwarf passed the test. The king was afraid, but he was a man of his word. He was not so lucky and died from a blow.

The prophetic dwarf was proclaimed king and decided to build the Temple of Divine Light in his honor; the House of the Old Mother, in honor of his mother, and the Governor’s House.

Uxmal is one of the archaeological sites that Mexico, specifically Yucatán, offers to people from all over the world. According to them, it is amazing.

The beauty of the huge structures captivates everyone who visits this city. Mitos y Leyendas says goodbye for now and thanks you for your attention and interest. See you next time!
