Many theories have come out about the death of one of the most famous drug traffickers in history, some of which contradict the «official version» presented by the Colombian authorities. Yet one has endured.

The story told at the time was that a police officer shot the leader of the Medellín gang. However, other stories were presented ranging from paramilitaries to suicide.

What we do know is that Pablo Escobar died on December 2, 1993, at the age of 44, in the city that had been turned into a bunker with a moat. More than a quarter of a century later, we tell you about the fall of the man who called himself El Patron and who marked a decade of Colombian history with blood and fire.

According to reports from the BBC , the most popular version of Escobar’s death — told in dozens of books, television series and movies — is that he was assassinated by then-police chief Hugo Aguilar along with other members of Colombia’s security forces.

The controversial figure of Hugo Aguilar became an advance, then lieutenant governor of the department of Santander and was convicted of paramilitary involvement in 2011. In February 2018, he was arrested again for enriching himself.

In his book This is how I killed Pablo Escobar (2015), Aguilar said about the moment of Escobar’s death: “I took the radio and shouted: ‘Long live Colombia!’” The policeman claimed that he was the one who shot the drug dealer and took charge of the operation.

The drug lord had been on the run from the police, the armed forces and an elite agency known as the «Search Group» had been working on his capture for months. And the United States sent agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to help find the gang leader.

The Colombian government had been left in disrepair and abandoned after Escobar and his men easily escaped from prison in 1992. The prison was remodeled by members of the Escobar family to be full of luxury and comfort.

Since Escobar’s disappearance, his search had been declared a national priority and the drug trafficker who began his life on the streets of the small town of Rionegro, in the state of Antioquia, had become the most wanted criminal in the world.

With his wife and two children locked up in a hotel in Bogotá and most of his men in prison or dead, he had no choice but to hide and fight back in Medellín. Increasingly trapped, he made the mistake of trying to get his family out of the country, making him an easy target. According to the official story, the credit for finding and killing him belongs to the search group and the Colombian intelligence agencies.
