Three families experienced a scary morning. Two mourning their victims while the third searches for a way to get Teddy Mejía, 32, out of jail.

Misfortune unfolded when Mejía lost control of a 2021 BMW M850i, left the road and hit a tree in Teaneck, New Jersey.

Mejía is the manager of the family restaurant La Reina del Chicharrón, in that town. That night he did not know where he was going.

«Mejia was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center for treatment of bodily injuries,» the prosecutor said.

What happened to Teddy Mejía?

«Two passengers, unidentified males, were pronounced deceased at the scene,» Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said in a statement.

The accident was reported at 2:00 in the morning on Saturday, October 21, 2023, to Teaneck Police Department.

The investigation led authorities to suspect that it was a vehicular homicide.

The prosecution requested the arrest of the driver, Teddy Mejía, who was still in the hospital.

Charged with vehicular manslaughter

They reported that: «Mejia was charged with two counts of second-degree vehicular manslaughter under NJSA 2C:11-5(1), due to driving while intoxicated.»

«And third-degree possession of a controlled dangerous substance, NJSA 2C:35-10a(1),» the prosecutor’s office said.

Additionally, the driver «received citations for driving while impaired, drunkenness, reckless driving, and not maintaining a lane,» Musella said.

When Mejía improves and can be discharged he will be sent to the Bergen County Jail pending his first court appearance in New Jersey.
