Sednaya Prison had become an emblem of Assad’s regime brutality.
For years, international organizations documented torture, extrajudicial executions, and inhumane conditions at the facility.
A 2017 Amnesty International report revealed that between 2011 and 2015, 5,000 to 13,000 people were secretly executed there.
These executions, following trials lasting mere minutes, were often preceded by beatings and hangings.
The bodies of victims were taken to mass graves, leaving families in the dark about their loved ones’ fates.
Dramatic Videos Accompany Sednaya’s Liberation
Editors of Sednaya Prison discovered it to be an entire city of buildings, basements, and cells.
It appears that all the pictures and clips released so far are only a small part of what remains.

The liberation of Sednaya was accompanied by dramatic footage shared on social media, showing women, children, and other prisoners emerging from cells as insurgents declared, «Bashar al-Assad is gone; you are free.»
The prison’s fall occurred during a rapid offensive that, within just ten days, dismantled government lines and led to the capture of Damascus.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Bashar al-Assad has fled the country to an undisclosed location, leaving his regime in disarray.
State television confirmed Assad’s overthrow in a broadcast featuring a group of men announcing the liberation of all prisoners and the regime’s downfall.
Meanwhile, Syrian citizens took to the streets to tear down portraits of Assad and other regime symbols, as reported by Infobae.

The international community responded to the developments.
U.S. President Joe Biden described the situation as «extraordinary,» while President-elect Donald Trump stated, «Assad is gone.»
In Syria, citizens expressed hope and relief after the fall of the Assad regime.
«My feelings are indescribable,» said Omar Daher, a lawyer who lost his father and whose brother has been missing for years.
Another Damascus resident, Amer Batha, tearfully remarked, «We are starting a new chapter in Syria’s history.»

Despite the jubilation over the regime’s fall, experts warn of significant challenges ahead for Syria.
The fragmentation among rebel groups, international tensions, and years of devastation present major obstacles to political transition and reconstruction.
The liberation of Sednaya Prison stands as a powerful symbol of the end of an oppressive era.
However, the path to stability and reconciliation will be long and complex.
