  • Strong earthquake strikes Myanmar: An aftershock or a new threat?
  • Tension rises in already affected areas.
  • Thousands still injured after the March quake.

A new 5.5-magnitude earthquake shook central Myanmar on Sunday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The epicenter was located near the city of Meiktila, about 97 kilometers south of Mandalay.

One of the areas hardest hit by the powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck the country on March 28.

This new tremor comes as Myanmar is still grappling with the devastating aftermath of the previous quake.

That quake left more than 3,600 people dead and over 5,000 injured, according to the spokesperson for the military government, Major General Zaw Min Tun.

Myanmar’s Department of Meteorology stated that the new quake originated in Wundwin township at a depth of 20 kilometers, though the USGS estimated a shallower depth of 7.7 km.

Despite its strength, authorities reported no significant damage or casualties from this latest tremor.

It is considered one of the strongest among the numerous aftershocks that have rattled the region since late March.

Mandalay, the country’s second-largest city, suffered extensive damage during the initial earthquake.

Naypyitaw, the capital, was also affected, with several government buildings damaged.

Both cities lie within the corridor where Sunday’s quake was strongly felt.

Relief efforts continue under difficult conditions as residents cope with the fear of additional aftershocks.

The situation remains tense, and authorities have urged citizens to stay alert.

According to the USGS, Myanmar continues to register high seismic activity since March 28, which could lead to more significant movements in the coming days.
