Fifty-six people, including children, lost their lives after fans at a soccer match in Guinea allegedly clashed over a controversial referee decision.

Authorities reported this on Monday, December 2.

The stampede occurred on Sunday afternoon at a stadium in the city of Nzérékoré, Guinea.

The match, part of the finals of a local tournament, featured teams from Labé and Nzérékoré and was held in honor of Guinea’s military leader, Mamadi Doumbouya.

“Victims were recorded during the stampede,” said Guinea’s Prime Minister, Amadou Oury Bah, on his official X account (formerly Twitter), without providing further details.

Regional authorities were working to restore calm in the area, he added.

Local media reported that security forces attempted to use tear gas to quell the unrest at the scene.

The chaos erupted after the penalty kick decision, according to The Associated Press.

“This (the disputed penalty) enraged the fans, who began throwing stones….»

«That’s when security services started using tear gas,” reported the local outlet Media Guinea.

The report added that several of the deceased were children, and some of the injured treated at a regional hospital were in critical condition.

Videos purportedly recorded at the stadium showed sections of the crowd shouting and protesting the referee’s decision.

As fans rushed onto the field, others fled the stadium, many attempting to scale the high fences to escape.

Footage also depicted numerous people lying on the floor of what appeared to be a hospital.

While a crowd gathered nearby, some assisting the injured.

Authorities are investigating to determine who is responsible for the stampede, Bah said in a statement broadcast on national television. (WATCH VIDEOS HERE)
