The suspect in a deadly shooting at a Walmart in Newton County has died after shooting himself during a standoff with authorities in South Carolina, officials reported.

Dwayne Eduh, 24, died Sunday night from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The incident occurred after law enforcement located him Friday in Aiken, South Carolina, more than 240 kilometers east of Covington, where the tragedy took place.

According to the police report, Eduh opened fire inside the Walmart Supercenter on Salem Road early Friday morning, while the store was still closed.

During the attack, he allegedly killed Khalaf Barksdale, 21, and injured Ryan Bradley, 29, both coworkers.

Afterward, the suspect went to a residence about two miles from the store, where another victim, Akeela Clarke, 19, also worked.

Clarke was killed at that location before Dwayne Eduh fled to South Carolina.

Authorities located him hours later, and after a brief confrontation with police, the young man shot himself. He remained in critical condition until his death on Sunday night.

This incident has shocked the local community and reignited debate over workplace safety.

It is not the first time the Salem Road Walmart has been involved in a violent incident.

In October of last year, the same store was the scene of a shooting between two employees during an argument in the parking lot. On that occasion, no one was injured and both individuals were arrested.
