  • Here are the details.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum acknowledged on Monday that her recent phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump did not result in an agreement.

The call aimed to remove tariffs imposed by Washington on Mexican steel, aluminum, and automotive products.

During her morning press conference, Sheinbaum described the call—held last Wednesday—as “very productive,” though she admitted that no resolution was reached on the issue.

“We are discussing the issue of tariffs on steel, aluminum, and automotive products; we didn’t reach an agreement, but we did present arguments,” stated the president.

The president explained that dialogue remains open at both the presidential level and between Mexico’s Secretariat of Economy and the U.S. Department of Commerce. Sheinbaum is seeking for the same tariff conditions to apply to these sectors as to other products covered by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

Which were recently exempted from global tariffs by the Trump administration.

“Our position is, just like in other cases, that goods covered by the free trade agreement should face zero tariffs,” she said.

Mexico and the Trade Deficit with the United States

Sheinbaum also noted that Mexico maintains a trade deficit with the United States in steel and aluminum.

Which, in her view, strengthens her administration’s argument for eliminating the 25% tariffs still in effect on these materials and on automobiles.

As for the automotive sector, the president chose not to go into detail.

Though she reiterated her commitment to defending Mexican exports and to the USMCA as a strategic tool for all three member nations.

Other Topics in the Conversation

In addition to tariffs, the conversation touched on other sensitive bilateral matters, such as the 21% tariffs the United States plans to impose on Mexican tomatoes over alleged dumping practices, and Mexico’s compliance with the 1944 Water Treaty.

The state of Texas has accused the Mexican government of failing to deliver the water volumes stipulated in the agreement.

Sheinbaum did not provide further details on these points, but she reaffirmed that the bilateral relationship remains active and that her administration will continue seeking solutions through diplomatic dialogue.
