  • Here are the details.

The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, responded on Wednesday to the statements made by the President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, who proposed renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the ‘Gulf of America’.

In her morning press conference, Sheinbaum presented an old world map edited in 1607 by a Flemish cartographer for the Amsterdam-based Dutch East India Company.

In it, the area was already labeled as ‘Gulf of Mexico’.

She also pointed out that the territory which today constitutes the United States was referred to as ‘Mexican America’.

«Obviously, the name Gulf of Mexico is recognized by the international community and endorsed by the United Nations. But why don’t we call it Mexican America? It sounds nice, doesn’t it?» commented Sheinbaum with a touch of irony.

The president reminded everyone that the 1814 Apatzingán Constitution already referred to the term ‘Mexican America’, highlighting the historical roots of this name.

This statement comes after Trump mentioned his proposal during a public event, arguing that the name ‘Gulf of America’ would better reflect U.S. influence in the region.

However, the words of the Republican leader have generated reactions both in Mexico and internationally.

Sheinbaum concluded her remarks by emphasizing that the name Gulf of Mexico is deeply rooted in global history and geography.

And that any attempt to change it lacks historical or political basis. This was reported by the EFE news agency.

These statements come after President-elect Donald Trump raised the possibility of renaming the Gulf of Mexico.

This suggestion has sparked divided opinions on social media.
