A member of Prince Harry and Meghan’s security detail described the recent car chase involving paparazzi in New York City as «chaotic» and said the incident could have ended tragically, with fatalities.

In exclusive statements to CNN, Chris Sánchez, who is part of Harry’s security team, talked about the pursuit by several photographers after they left the Women of Vision awards gala at the Ziegfeld Ballroom.

«There were about a dozen vehicles: cars, scooters and bicycles» surrounding the couple’s car, Sanchez said. He added, «The public were in jeopardy at several points. It could have been fatal. They were jumping curbs and red lights.»

«At one point they blocked the limousine (carrying the couple) and started taking pictures until we were able to get out,» Sanchez told CNN he was concerned for Harry and Meghan, «…but more for the public, because they (the paparazzi) were being very erratic.»

«People were on the sidewalks and crossing streets and (photographers) were running red lights.» The couple changed cars more than once during the chase, Sanchez added. In fact, the couple was seen leaving the awards ceremony in a black car and later they were seen in a yellow taxi.

Following the incident, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were «scared, exhausted, but relieved to be back» where they were staying. NYPD sources told CBS New York that several cars followed the vehicle Harry and Meghan were in after attending the awards show at the Ziegfield Ballroom in midtown Manhattan.

They are still going through some videos to piece together exactly what happened. New York Mayor Eric Adams, also spoke about it and said that the photographers were «reckless and irresponsible.» «The briefing I received, two of our officers could’ve been injured,» the mayor noted at a press conference.

«I don’t think there’s many of us, who don’t recall how his mom died,» Adams added, referring to the tragic accident that killed Princess Diana in August 1997 when she and Dodi Al Fayed were chased by several photographers.
