Two Russian tourists died after being swept away by strong currents in the waters south of Manila.
One of them drowned, while the other was attacked by sharks, the Philippine Coast Guard reported.
The incident took place near Verde Island, a popular diving destination in Batangas province.
Two other Russian tourists managed to return safely to the boat with the help of their dive instructor.
Diving in the Philippines Ends in Tragedy Due to Strong Currents
The tourists departed by boat from Puerto Galera along with a Filipino dive instructor.
While diving, they were caught in strong currents, which separated the group underwater.
Two of the Russians managed to resurface, but the other two disappeared.
The victims were identified as Ilia Peregudin, 29, and Maksim Melekhov, 39.
The instructor and other divers immediately started a search operation with the support of the coast guard.
Melekhov was found unconscious an hour later and pronounced dead at a Batangas hospital.
Peregudin was discovered while being attacked by sharks in the water.
Rescuers managed to pull him out, but his right arm had been severed by the sharks.
Authorities in the Philippines have launched an investigation to prevent another tragedy like this one in the area.

The coast guard is set to discuss new safety measures with provincial officials.
