Is he in legal jeopardy? Rudy Giuliani, who was Donald Trump’s attorney, is being investigated in Georgia for his involvement in the former president’s attempts to interfere in the 2020 election, which he lost to current president Joe Biden, according to EFE and the AP.

Rudy Giuliani, whose conspiracy theories about alleged Democratic interference in the election have been the subject of the criminal investigation led by Fulton County Prosecutor Fani Willis, was due to appear before a grand jury on Monday afternoon in Atlanta, Georgia.

His lawyer revealed in an interview with The New York Times that the former New York mayor is being investigated and that he will probably not testify about the conversations he had with former President Donald Trump. Since last May, a special grand jury in Georgia has been examining whether the former president and others committed crimes by pressuring politicians in that state in relation to the results of the 2020 election.

On Monday, a federal judge rejected Republican Senator Lindsey Graham’s attempt to avoid appearing before the grand jury on August 23 to answer questions about two alleged phone calls he made to Georgia election officials, reported EFE.

In Georgia and other US states, special grand juries cannot determine criminal guilt, but they do have the power to demand the appearance of witnesses under subpoena and the transfer of documents, within a process that takes place in secret.

A grand jury — made up of between 16 or 23 people — issues a report of its conclusions and sometimes recommends a course of action but it is up to the prosecutors to decide whether to pursue charges or not.

The AP news agency also reported on Monday that special prosecutor Nathan Wade notified Rudy Giuliani’s attorney in Atlanta that the former mayor of New York City could face criminal charges, according to another attorney for defendant, Robert Costello.

The revelation that Rudy Giuliani is the target of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’ investigation brings the investigation closer to the former president. Willis has said she is considering calling Trump himself to testify before the special grand jury, and the former president has hired a criminal defense attorney in Atlanta.

Police scrutiny of Trump’s actions is intensifying. Last week, the FBI searched his Florida mansion Mar-a-Lago as part of an investigation into whether he brought confidential White House documents there. He also faces a civil investigation in New York over allegations that his company, the Trump Organization, misled banks and tax authorities about the value of his assets. And the US Department of Justice is investigating the January 6 insurrection at the US Capitol by Trump supporters and attempts to nullify the presidential election that he falsely claimed were stolen from him, the AP news agency detailed.

Rudy Giuliani, who spread false claims of voter fraud in Atlanta’s Fulton County as he led efforts to overturn election results in the state, will testify Wednesday before a special grand jury that was formed at Willis’s request.
