An innocent baby’s horrific death. A man identified as Reynaldo Cruz, 27, was arrested and charged with the death of his 3-month-old son, who suffered 18 rib fractures and another four skull fractures, according to the police in Laredo, Texas.

Reynaldo Cruz was indicted on June 15 for the crimes of murder and injury to a child. Webb County jail records cited by local newspaper Laredo Morning Times indicated that, at least as of Friday, June 17, the suspect was still behind bars for the tragic incident.

On May 4, Janeth Alejandra Velez, 33, was charged with one count of murder and two counts of injury to a child. She is currently out on bond, jail records indicated. Both were first indicted on child injury charges in September 2019 until the death of their son Dominic Cruz on July 29, 2021, the Laredo Morning Times reported. That indictment was dismissed only for them to be re-indicted in April for the murder along with charges of injury to a child.

Lawyer A. René Cantú represents Vélez and previously told the newspaper that she is innocent and a victim of domestic abuse at the hands of Reynaldo Cruz. The tragedy occurred on September 13, 2018, when police responded to a report of injury to a child at Child Protective Services (CPS) in the 1500 block of North Arkansas Avenue.

A CPS investigator testified that she received a case from the Corpus Christi office in which a 3-month-old boy was at Driscoll Children’s Hospital with a skull fracture and other injuries. Authorities said little Dominic had old injuries. He had been airlifted from Doctors Hospital South in Laredo to Corpus Christi. His parents were later identified as Reynaldo Cruz and Janeth Vélez.

Preliminary information indicated that the boy had been airlifted with respiratory complications, but Driscoll medical staff determined that Dominic had sustained major trauma, as he had multiple broken ribs in addition to other skull fractures that caused severe cerebral bleeding, according to an arrest affidavit cited by the Laredo Morning Times.

A Driscoll intake specialist told police at the time that the boy had little or no brain activity and might not survive his injuries, the affidavit stated. The parents claimed that the little boy had fallen from the bed, which was about 60 centimeters high. Velez also told doctors that she had accidentally hit her son’s head against a door frame.

So, CPS took temporary custody of Dominic and his 3-year-old brother because Reynaldo Cruz and Janeth Velez couldn’t explain the «disturbing injuries» Dominic had, the affidavit said. In an interview with police, the woman stated that she had experienced postpartum depression and detailed four incidents in which she and Reynaldo Cruz had had accidents with the child, the Times report noted.
