The mass shooting has shocked the community, and Bates College issued a statement expressing its sorrow and solidarity with the victims.

«And we mourn those whose lives were tragically lost in this atrocious act of violence,» it concluded about the tragedy.

The Lewiston Police Department has identified the locations where mass shootings occurred Wednesday night.

They include Schemengees Bar and Grille and Sparetime Recreation, according to local police.

So far, the restaurant has not responded to requests for comment from CNN.

Police issued warnings

Local authorities issued a warning to the community to stay away from scenes of the massacre.

Additionally, Lewiston Police conducted an intensive search for the suspect identified as 40-year-old Robert Card.

The operation began at 11 pm, US Eastern Time. Police advised that he should be considered armed and dangerous.

Census data reflects that in recent years, Lewiston has experienced growth in its foreign-born population.

A manhunt for the shooter

More than 7% of Lewston’s residents are foreign-born, although this figure is still lower than the national average of almost 14%.

Police were searching intensively for Robert Card, the man who killed 16 people at a local restaurant and bowling alley.

Health officials closed doctors’ offices and canceled non-essential surgeries in the town and six surrounding counties.

Classes were also suspended at all schools in the area, and terrified residents locked themselves in their homes.
