  • Streamlined application review

The US Embassy in Mexico has announced significant changes to the tourist visa renewal process, making the procedure easier for thousands of applicants.

Starting now, individuals whose visa expired less than four years ago may renew it without having to attend an in-person interview.

Previously, this benefit only applied to visas that had expired within the past 12 months. With the new policy, the period is extended to 48 months.

The main goal is to expedite processing and reduce the long wait times many Mexicans currently face when seeking to travel to the United States.

The embassy emphasized on social media that the visa renewal process without an interview is faster than applying for a visa for the first time.

The change aims to benefit people with a clean immigration history, allowing for a more efficient evaluation of their applications.

However, not everyone is eligible for this streamlined process, as there are specific criteria that must be met.

One requirement is that the applicant must have obtained the previous visa in the same country where the renewal request is being submitted.

In addition, the applicant must be a citizen or permanent resident of that country and be physically present there.

It is also essential that the applicant’s fingerprints were collected during the issuance of the previous visa.

Another key condition is that the prior visa must not have been revoked, stolen, or lost.

Furthermore, individuals whose most recent visa application was denied are not eligible for renewal without an interview.

If all these conditions are met, the applicant can follow a fairly straightforward online process.

The first step is to complete the DS-160 form on the official website of the US Department of State.

This form requires personal details, employment information, contact data, and the purpose of the trip.

Once submitted, the system generates a barcode that will be used to track and manage the application.

Next, the applicant must create an account on the US Visa Service portal by entering an email address and creating a password.

After setting up the account, the applicant must pay the applicable fee, which is $185 for a B1/B2 tourist visa.

Once payment is confirmed, the applicant can schedule an appointment at the Applicant Service Center (CAS).

No interview is conducted during this appointment, but biometric data—such as fingerprints and photographs—may be updated if necessary.

Afterward, the system will notify the applicant if they qualify for the interview waiver process, and if so, will provide instructions on how to submit the required documents.

Documents may either be delivered to the appropriate consular section or sent via courier, as directed.

Finally, the renewed visa can either be picked up at the CAS or delivered to the applicant’s home through the selected shipping service.

Authorities recommend carefully following all the steps and double-checking the information to avoid errors that could delay the process.

The program’s expansion is a relief for thousands who wish to travel for tourism, family visits, or personal reasons.

This measure comes at a time when wait times for first-time visa appointments remain long at many US consulates across Mexico.

The goal of the interview-free renewal program is to ease the workload at consulates and speed up visa issuance for those who have already been approved in the past.

According to Informador, more people are expected to benefit from this new policy in the coming months, as long as they meet all the eligibility requirements.
