The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) of the United States Department of Agriculture ordered the recall of frozen meat pizzas from an Illinois company over fears they may be contaminated with bits of metal.

Home Run Inn Frozen Foods, based in Woodbridge, Illinois, is recalling more than 13,000 pounds of frozen pizzas that could be contaminated with «foreign materials,» specifically metal, warned an FSIS statement issued on Sunday,  according to Newsweek on Monday, August 15.

The product in question is called Chicago’s Premium Pizzeria Deluxe Sausage Classic Pizza which is sold in 33.5-ounce cardboard boxes. The products being recalled were produced on June 6, 2022 and have an expiration date of December 3, 2022, the report said.

The frozen pizzas featured in the recall also bear the establishment number “EST. 18498-A” inside the USDA mark of inspection, FSIS said in the news release. The products were shipped to a distributor in Illinois and then to retailers, the agency added.

According to Newsweek, the problem was discovered after FSIS was notified that the company had received consumer complaints that metal had been found in the pizzas. However, FSIS noted that there have been no confirmed reports of «injuries or adverse reactions due to consumption of these products» and advised anyone concerned about an injury or illness to contact a health care provider.

«FSIS is concerned that some products may be in consumers’ freezers or found in retail and distribution stores,» the statement said. “Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. Additionally, distributors and retailers are urged not to sell these products. These products must be discarded or returned to the place of purchase.”

The USDA has classified the recall as Class I (high or medium risk), which means that it implies «a situation of danger to health in which there is a reasonable probability that eating the food will cause health problems or death,» according to Newsweek.

Lowe said in a statement sent to Newsweek.

If you have a Home Run Inn Chicago’s Premium Pizzeria Deluxe Sausage Classic Pizza (33.5 oz) with an expiration date of 12/03/22, please return the uneaten item in its original packaging to your point of purchase for a full refund.»
